Abarth Motorcycle History - Web Exclusive

Although indelibly connected to the Fiat brand, performance specialists Abarth trace its roots back to motorcycling in the 1920s and 1930s. In fact, founder Karl Abarth was a respected motorcycle racer, designing and building his own machine in 1924. This became the first vehicle to carry his Abarth family name.

In 1934 Karl Abarth challenged the Orient Express to a race using a motorcycle and sidecar. To help cement his reputation, Abarth travelled the agreed route in a shorter time than the legendary train.

The modern Abarth is celebrating its two-wheeled heritage at Motorcycle Live 2012, which will take place in Birmingham, England from November 24 to December 2. The company's display will feature the Abarth 595 Competizione based on the Fiat 500, as well as the 'Scorpione' motorcycle. The latter was built as a tribute to Karl Abarth by Attitude Customs.
