Rhys Millen Sets Pikes Peak Record - Web Exclusive

Takes Overall Win and Shatters Record.

The 90th running of Pikes Peak finally came to reality, after being put on hold due to wild fires in Colorado Springs this summer, and it did not disappoint. For the first time in the history of the event the entire road up the mountain was paved, opening the floodgates for a diverse participation of vehicles to compete. Everything from Time Attack cars, one-off electric racers and even some heavily modified street cars looked to Pikes Peak as a new venue for motorsports junkies.

Rhys Millen has been in hot pursuit of a sub 10-minute ‘Race To The Clouds’ for several years now, every year improving his cars ¬(in one case building a purpose built Pikes racecar) and expanding the Rhys Millen Racing Team. Rhys came well prepared this year with his latest Pikes Peak racecar a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Cranking out an intense 700hp and 700 lb-ft.

"With the insights gained from the last few years in our Genesis Coupe, the team was able to make some high-impact improvements, leveraging additional downforce and traction opportunities provided by the new all-tarmac surface. And behind the wheel, my experience at Pikes Peak over the years allowed me to shave a few tenths from virtually every corner. Breaking the ten minute barrier is something I've always wanted to do, and it feels great to accomplish this goal in 2012.", stated Millen.

Millen completed his run in 9:46.164, literally walking away with the overall win and a well-deserved spot in the record books. Even blistering past LeMans winner and Factory Porsche driver Romain Dumas in his race prepped Porsche Cup Car.
