Finishing in Los Angeles on Monday, November 14, the journey traversed 11 states, three time zones and took eight days. Yet the XF only required four stops for fuel – its peak economy was 67mpg on the penultimate day. However, we’re unsure whether this is US or British MPG, since both are slightly different thanks to different sized gallons. If this is a British figure, then the car actually achieved a peak of 55.8mpg in US gallons.
Confusion aside, this makes the XF 2.2 Diesel the most efficient Jaguar ever created.
Paul Alcock at Jaguar Cars, who took part in the journey, commented: “The project was designed primarily to test the potential economy of the XF 2.2. The incredible figures achieved by the car were accomplished through making every element of the new XF as efficient as possible – from its aerodynamics to its four-cylinder 2.2-liter diesel engine linked to an eight-speed transmission.”
Driven by independent testers, David and Alexander Madgwick, the XF 2.2 was a stock UK-registered, right-hand drive vehicle. In the course of the coast-to-coast adventure, the car maintained an average speed of 53mph, including the busy roads around New York and Los Angeles, plus a climb to 7,275ft above sea level.
There is speculation that Jaguar may introduce the diesel model to North America, which would be a first for the premium British manufacturer.
