Adding to the appeal of its premium subcompact, Audi has announced a new five-door Sportback version of its A1 model that offers five seats and greater versatility than the original three-door model. Sadly, neither version is destined for US sale but it’s still a great looking car.
It will initially come with four TFSI and TDI engines – 1.2 TFSI 86hp, 1.4 TFSI 122hp, 1.4 TFSI twin-charge 185hp and 1.6 TDI diesel 105hp. Inevitably, the diesel wins the efficiency contest, with a claimed 62mpg US, although a 2.0 TDI will follow with 143hp.
The turbocharged and supercharged 1.4 TFSI 185hp will feature the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, helping it to sprint 0-62mph in 7.0sec on the way to a top speed of 141mph. This transmission is also an option for the 1.4 TFSI 122hp. All other versions use manual transmissions.
Although compact, the A1’s has city-friendly dimensions that closely resemble the three-door A1. However, the Sportback is actually 6mm taller and wider. This is said to offer more head and shoulder room as a result, although we doubt many people would notice the difference.
Options on the A1 Sportback include Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights, as well as a high-beam assistant, light and rain sensors, to name a few. The list of more indulgent extras extends to everything from heated front seats and special colors for the air vent sleeves, to fine leather upholstery.
Externally, the options for the Sportback offer customers the possibility to choose one of three contrasting colors for the roof line as well as the entire roof itself.
The Sportback will also expand on the 11 paint colors available for the three-door with Samoa Orange – available exclusively for the five-door.
