At the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche will present the 911 Sport Classic. By creating this model, Porsche is returning to its tradition of exclusive series built in very small numbers. The 911 Sport Classic, for example, will be offered in a production run of just 250 cars worldwide. The bespoke character of the 911 Sport Classic has been developed over a period of three years by Porsche Exclusive, the company’s Specialist Department which creates personalized versions of Porsche cars.
Paragraph Fans of the Porsche 911 will immediately recognize the styling cues, principally the ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler reminiscent of the famous 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 as well as the iconic ‘Fuchs-style’ custom-made wheels. The Sport Classic is further distinguished by its more powerful engine, new styling, a new center section in the roof, side sills, as well as new front and rear lights.
Every car in the series comes in the exclusive Sport Classic Grey with discreet dark trim strips. The elegant interior in Espresso Nature sets new standards, beyond even the customization of the 911 interior already offered by Porsche Exclusive.
The most essential specifications include 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine developing 408hp; six-speed manual transmission; rear-wheel drive; 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds; top speed 187mph; fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle of 26.6mpg (Imperial).
The SportDesign front panel with its spoiler lip, provides an aerodynamic balance with the rear spoiler and emphasize the unique face of the 911 Sport Classic. The bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights come with black surrounds as standard, similar to famous racing cars such as the 1974 911 Turbo RSR.
The headlights supplement other features in black, such as the intake grilles, the mirror triangles and mirror base. The double-dome roof stands out clearly and again gives reference to the 911 Panamericana show car and Carrera GT.
Through their unique shape, the side sills emphasize the substantial width of the car at the rear. While the Sport Classic is based on the 911 Carrera S, it features the rear bodywork of the all-wheel drive models, and is thus 1.73” wider. This translates into the rear track also being 1.34" wider for more lateral grip.
Another important feature are the aluminum doors, which help to offset the weight of the wide range of standard equipment.
Making clear reference to role models from the past, the fixed ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler forms part of the aerodynamic package of the Sport Classic. A unique rear panel, inspired by the sporting design of the GT cars, rounds off the 911 Sport Classic with the rear light clusters in clear glass.
The rear lid proudly bears a chrome-plated "911 Sport Classic" designation and an "Exclusive" motif on the front right fenders confirms the limited production. A bespoke car cover delivered in a matching bag comes as standard with each car, offering an indispensable detail for the collector.
The engine features a newly-developed resonance intake system with six switching butterflies. The 3.8-liter flat-six with Direct Fuel Injection is based on the engine in the 911 Carrera S. However, working on various details in the intake manifold has allowed Porsche to increase output and torque, particularly in the medium speed range. Combined with modified cylinder heads, a new intake system and new engine management, the upgrades raise output by 23hp to 408hp
