For the first time in history, Mercedes-Benz joins the SEMA convention in Las Vegas, NV with the unveiling of a unique Tuner Challenge based on its compact SUV called the GLK-Class. The competition is very similar to VW's tuner challenge two years ago with the Mk5 GTI where APR, ABD Racing and WRD battled, as well as Volvo's challenge last year between Evolve, Heico and ipd.
This year for Mercedes, tuners used different themes to create unorthodox examples of the GLK and its tuning capabilities. The examples are to promote the sale of the GLK to the North American market scheduled in January '09.
The first example is built by Renntech of Flordia and called the Pikes Peak Rally Racer. Inspired by the hill climb cars of Colorado, this GLK is designed for uphill rallies with a hybrid module that allows the highest acceleration figures.
The second example is built by Brabus. This car is no stranger to readers as it was unveiled last year at the Essen Motor Show. Named Widestar, this GLK is already production-ready with high-performance engine upgrades and bolt-on aerodynamics.
The next example is truly uncommon and appeals to more of the big wheels Dub scene. Built by Boulevard Customs from Florida, this GLK is called the Urban Whip and has an obnoxiously stretched widebody with 26" wheels, plus plenty of audio and video equipment to steal a car show.
Last but not least is A GLK Rock Crawler done up by Legendary Motorcar of Canada. Designed for utility, it's the perfect SUV for snowboarders or wakeboarders with plenty of extra cargo space and off-road capabilities.
All GLKs are based off the production GLK350 with a 272hp 3.5 liter V6 except the Brabus model which uses a diesel-driven GLK320 CDI.
The winner of the GLK challenge will be selected based on viewer voting at www.mbusa.com so cast your vote!
