The new S4 will receive a potent 333hp, 324.5 ft-lb 3.0L V6 with direct fuel injection and an intercooled supercharger. The factory claims it will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 5.1sec and achieve 24.25 mpg. Of course, it wouldn't be an Audi without its Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system (40/60 split), plus the addition of sport suspension for great off-the-lot handling. Transmission options will include a seven-speed S tronic or six-speed manual. There's also an option for a sport differential which is said to distribute the torque effectively between the rear wheels.With performance this impressive, Audi hopes to compete with the BMW M3 sedan and Mercedes C63 AMG.
After ditching the 2.7L V6 twin-turbocharged Audi S4 in '03 for a 4.2L V8, Audi is finally returning to forced induction for next year's new S4 and S4 Avant. The 2.7T was known to be one of the most tunable motors in the European market as shown by high-horsepower examples like the eurotuner GP champions of '06 and '07.
The interior and exterior design has slightly changed from the previous generation S4. New front and rear bumpers offer a unique look, along with a new trunk lid with incorporated spoiler, rear LED lighting, aluminum mirrors and 18" wheels. The calipers feature S4 logos while the sport seats will have unique color offerings to set it apart from the competition. S4 accents continue into the steering wheel, door sills, key fob and gauge cluster. An aggressive quad exhaust design completes the new look. \
As far as chassis work, the new S4 will be using the latest technology and materials available to create a secure vehicle. New high-strength steels are used throughout which are stronger and lighter than previous generations. A repositioned clutch and torque converter also allows more forward position of the front axle which will give the S4 a longer wheelbase helping with handling, comfort and load distribution.
Other new features include the Audi Drive Select which allows the driver to vary the engine, transmission, steering and suspension dampening characteristics with the touch of a button. So you can adjust the comfort levels for your drive to work, but let the car open up when you're alone in the canyons.
New electronics are also standard such as an intelligent key which stores service information in the key. There's also a self-opening trunk lid, Bluetooth hands-free telephone interface, Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker sound system and lane change assist.
European markets will start seeing both the sedan and Avant next year but the US won't be as fortunate. We'll have to wait till the autumn of '09 until we start seeing the '10 model hit dealerships - and that's only in the sedan. The Avant is not scheduled for US sale yet but keep your fingers crossed.
