We previously brought you news of Audi's forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI, but the manufacturer decided to give the new SUV a `nautical interpretation' at the Geneva Motor Show where the new Q7 V12 TDI - the world's most powerful diesel-powered passenger car - made it's world debut.
The highly efficient 6.0-liter V12 engine powering the new Q7 V12 TDI employs two turbochargers to help it deliver its mammoth 738 lb-ft (1000Nm) peak torque at just 1750rpm, guaranteeing breathtaking pace from the outset.
Optimum efficiency and economy are assured by a modified version of the highly sophisticated piezo common-rail fuel injection system, which boosts injector pressure to an exceptional 2000-bar. The cutting edge injection technology, in combination with a special exhaust gas recirculation system and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), ensures this high-tech motor meets proposed European EU5 targets for emissions applicable from 2010.
The advanced engine specification, honed with the benefit of expertise gained in the development of the Le Mans-winning, V12 TDI-powered Audi R10 TDI endurance racer, is emphasized by the performance data. Zero-62mph sprint time of just 5.5sec and a top speed limited to 155mph go hand-in-hand with a remarkably `real world' combined fuel economy figure of 23.7mpg.
In keeping with the rest of the Q7 range, the latest generation quattro four-wheel-drive system with 40/60 front-to-rear torque split distributes power four ways via a six-speed tiptronic transmission, and standard adaptive air suspension refines the ride on all surfaces. The three-mode adaptive system, with electronically controlled damping and roll stabilization plus adjustable ride height, has been reconfigured for the V12 TDI.
The rate at which the Q7 V12 TDI can scrub off speed will be as impressive thanks to standard ceramic brakes, which offer significant advantages over conventional steel discs. They are about half the weight, are largely unsusceptible to heat-fade and corrosion, and have an operating life of up to 185000 miles - four times that of steel discs.Externally, the Q7 V12 TDI makes its presence felt through its 20" 10-spoke alloy wheels, and through wider arches, a striking new front end featuring a unique chrome-plated grille and LED daytime running lights, plus additional under-body protection and large-bore exhausts.
The Q7 Coastline Concept takes SUV luxury to the next level, however.
Designed with the opulence of a luxury yacht in mind, the Q7 Coastline is finished externally in Inuit, a special ultra-luminous shade of white, which is set off by the single frame grille and side air intakes in dark high-gloss steel.
White also prevails inside, where an alabaster shade used extensively in yachts covers the majority of switches and controls, instrument panel and cowl, the plush velvet and leather-upholstered seats and carpet. For maximum impact, the embroidered floor mats, pillars, headliner, steering wheel and seatbelts are also color-matched in alabaster white.
The maritime theme is especially obvious in the dark waxed American walnut veneer which covers parts of the armrest, inner door sill trims, gear knob and, most prominently, the floor of the luggage compartment, giving it a deck-style look. Uniquely to the Q7 Coastline, two expandable storage boxes are also incorporated into the floor.
