VF/GIAC was the most powerful FWD with its 439whp GTI
The VF team swarmed around the GTI and insisted on a cool down period between runs, check data files on the laptop etc. The first two runs similar 435whp, but they managed to squeeze an impressive 439whp, 368 lb-ft from it on the third run. This made it the most powerful 2.0T we've seen to date by a considerable margin.
The Rabbit from Euro Sport Accessories wasn't expected to win the dyno competition. The team enjoys the event and loves the road course, so power numbers were a formality. The 20v motor was predictably consistent, turning in a best run of 159whp and 122 lb-ft.
Finally, it was the turn of WRD with their Mk5 GTI. Again, they wanted to get to the road course, so were unphased when they hit 256whp, 260 lb-ft after some cooling nitrous had been sprayed on the intercooler.
We should point out that the ambient temperatures increased from 79F for the first car to 92F for the last. And while GT Pro carefully corrected all the dyno numbers to compensate, it inevitably has an effect. But with this many cars to get through in one day, it's impossible to do them all under exactly the same conditions.
So at the end of the first day, several teams had grabbed the limelight; EuroCode and 034 had shown there was almost nothing between them; while VF, Fireballed! and ABD left everybody wondering how they would put down that much power on the drag strip...

GT Pro's Brian La Fuente,...
GT Pro's Brian La Fuente, Denis Dickerson and Grayson Lough. Sean Beaver was in the toilet
GT ProPresident of GT Pro, Brian LaFuente, started tuning Datsun Z-cars some 25 years ago, before turning to the Mitsubishi GT in '95 after he realized nobody was working on them. He started out modding his own car, but now manufactures his own parts and has established GT Pro as the best name in Mitsu GT tuning - having built two of the most powerful GT engines in the world, including the current record holder at 935hp.
As the GTs are getting older, the shop has looked to expand into European and domestic models. They're already making a name for themselves, having had both a Ferrari 360 and Porsche 911 published in European Car. However, they're also looking at VW, Audi and BMW. www.gtpro.com, 714/447-1697
