High school, a time of carefree bliss defined by great memories; and for many, their automotive roots. Whether it was the endless mechanical mistakes and long garage nights, or the many things you shouldn't have done behind the wheel, the one's who survived look back and smile.
For cousins Albert and Ryan Uhler, life was typical growing up in Finksburg, MD until months after turning 16, the two acquired well-worn Beetles. Mesmerized by their newfound freedom, the hours they spent driving were rivaled only by time spent wrenching. And if ever the flat timbre of an aircooled Bug was heard terrorizing the streets, it was assumed its other half wasn't far behind.
Unlike most gearheads who might have competed with one another, the cousins pooled their resources. Lacking funds but full of ambition, their grassroots modifications turned the two homely Bugs into a pair of respectable rides.
Always the wild one, mohawked Albert opted for an orange hue on his Bug once Ryan learned to paint. After spraying Albert's car, Ryan coated his own in a subtler purple.
Loud and shiny, the jellybeans served them well. But like most high school love affairs, the bright lights eventually faded. Cantankerous to the core, the aircooled VWs were sold as age necessitated civility. But like most who've dabbled in the Euro scene, the passion never dies and both caught the Dub addiction again, except this time their infatuations wore radiators.
