1991 VW Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition - Flirting with Trash - Web Exclusive

A Woman’s Love Affair with VW Turns Nostalgic.

When a man loves a woman it can be life changing, but when a woman loves a car, hell falls to its knees in adoration. Alyssa is just such a woman.

Her love affair with VWs began honestly enough. Her boyfriend (now husband) took her along to a dealership to collect his new Mk5 GTI. While she stood patiently by her man, a shimmering ’04 Satellite Blue New Beetle flirted for her attention.

The Beetle ultimately won, several days later Alyssa would return to buy the car. Her spiraling love affair with VW had begun.

Discovery
Its here we find ourselves faced with the unique feature car before you, a 1991 VW Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition. One of only 399 Bordeaux EA’s in the U.S. and even fewer equipped with an automatic transmission. We stumbled across Alyssa’s car while attending Waterfest 18 in Englishtown, NJ.

We were drawn to cars unique character. The embroidered patterned seats, a Bordeaux canvas top, and a low stance on top of some glorious “80’s trash” wheels. How could we resist.

Alyssa would explain her discovery of the car and how she was able to come home with it. After letting her beloved CC Executive go, she soon found herself in a pavement-blending sedan. She had to be back in a VW, if only just for the weekends.

While hunting on VwVortex she stumbled across a Cabriolet and a Fox Pickup. Inquiring about the cabriolet, fait would prove to be cruel, as the car had already been sold. It was down to the pickup and the EA Cabby she discovered. After discussing with her husband about the new toy she wanted to bring home, he agreed so long as she would let him bring home a motorcycle. Clearly we know the results of that arduous debate.

As the years passed, marriage, children and maturity stepped in; each occasion complimented by an appropriate VW. A Mk6 GTI (tuned and Porsche themed to hng with the husband’s crew), a VW Routan (for the kids), and a 2011 VW CC Executive (for maturity).

Home
After a long wait, the car was home. A thorough detailing by Jay at North Penn Imports saw the EA Cabby restored to its showroom glamor.

Adding her personal touch, a set extremely rare 15x8” Melber Scacchiera II wheels were signed, sealed and delivered by memoryfab.com. The company is known for locating rare wheels and making sure they fit your car.

As for Alyssa’s Bordeaux beauty, the wheels were drilled to the 4x100 bolt pattern. “I’d never seen wheels like these before and knew I had to have them.

Friend and mechanic at NLS (Nothing Leaves Stock in Coopersburg, PA), Josh would ensure the car was ready for the road in every aspect. In the stance department, for example, he supplied H&R Ultra Low springs, reinforcing the oil pan thanks to its new relationship to the ground.

To avoid rubbing, a pair of 25mm spacers were fitted out back, with 5mm up front.

Since the previous owner had installed a black soft-top, Alyssa spoke to Craig at Craig’s Auto Marine in Telford, PA who stepped in and installed it at a price that was too good to miss.

Finishing off the OEM+ exterior, a set of smoked crosshair headlights with Silverstar bulbs were added, along with a badgeless grille.

Dreaming
Alyssa isn’t ashamed of her VW lust. Planning for plenty of mods while the Cabby was in her possession (assuring us it would follow her to the grave), she’s hatched plans for a 2.0L ABA engine swap, shaved bay and five-speed auto. Even a respray and cosmetic enhancements are in the works. Yet as it stands, Alyssa has a rare example of one of VW’s most enchanting models. The two are just beginning a lifetime together but we know it’s in good hands and trust she will enhance it to a point where we should take another look at this relationship between a woman and her Convertible.
