How 'bout something a little different? It's true; we spend a fair amount of time focusing our coverage on high-profile vehicles - wide arches, flashy paint, mega horsepower and killer ICE are often major facets of an et feature car. And as long as people keep building 'em, we're gonna cover 'em. After all, somebody's got to feed the haters, right?Still, we'd be doing the et community a disservice if we didn't also cover the flip side. By that we mean cars built out of a passion for the hobby and designed with one thing in mind, and one thing only - to place smiles on their owner's face. Jay Lehrmann's 1997 Jetta Trek is a perfect example of such a car.
Jay bought his Jetta in '99. No stranger to the modified VW scene, and stranded many times by various mechanical letdowns on past project cars, he purchased this car with the intent to simply leave it the hell alone. Is it really necessary to even comment on how long or how well that particular strategy panned out? Don't be too hard on Jay; after all, who among us hasn't fallen into the same "I'm just going to lower it and throw on a set of wheels" syndrome? Still, Jay didn't exactly go crazy with the car and the fact it's taken him more than six years to reach its current state is proof of that.
