Some People Say It's Crazy To Organize A Car Show And Charity Drive In The Middle Of The Utah Winter...
Utah has always had a good VW fan base through local club, Wasser-Kuhler. While the group's monthly GTGs have always been popular, the members felt an organized charity drive was a great way for the club to break out of its infancy and show the community they weren't just punks tearing up State Street in Salt Lake City.
However, there were many who wondered who was crazy enough to organize a car show and charity drive in the Rocky Mountains at the end of November. Inevitably, there was skepticism about whether the event would actually happen. But apparently God's a fan of charity, because the weather was perfect and people showed up.
The Charity Drive was suggested by Mike Schreurs, Dustin Rice (interesting name for a Dubber...) and Leo Donado from Wasser-Kuhler. Despite the negative uproar from little girls not wanting to get cold, the idea took off. And while no drag racing, raffles or burnout contest were held, the Charity Drive was a beacon to VWs from all over Utah.
While the scene in Cali and the East Coast is busting at the seams, Utah hasn't adopted aftermarket VWs as comfortably. But after the Charity Drive, we're sure some opinions have changed. Dustin and Mike were able to get the show sponsored by Maceys Food Mart, who assisted in banking the food donations. Heritage Web Solutions were also kind enough to host the show, but the organizers would like to apologize for all the burnout tire marks left in their lot.
For a rowdy group of misfits, the motley crew was able to collect $100 worth of food for the needy. While it might not solve the crisis in Africa, there was satisfaction that at least it helped a few families during the holidays.
